The ‘Chinese whispers’ podcast on family memory

The ‘Chinese whispers’ podcast on family memory

Wed Aug 26 10:15:44 CEST 2026

Jana Nosková and Sandra Kreisslová speak in a podcast produced by IKDE in Freiburg.

The authors have titled the podcast ‘Tichá pošta’ (‘Stille Post’), and Tilman Kasten from the Institut für Kulturanalyse der Deutschen des östlichen Europa (Institute for Cultural Analysis of the Germans of Eastern Europe) discusses family memory and the intergenerational transmission of memories within families of forcibly displaced Germans and Germans who were permitted to remain in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War. Both researchers demonstrate how memories are passed down through families like messages in the well-known game of ‘Chinese whispers’, and how they change, fade away or take on new meanings.

The podcast was produced as part of the Everyday Danube project, in which the Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences is a partner (https://www.eu.avcr.cz/cs/aktuality/Everyday-Danube. -Open-Educational-Resource-on-Everyday-Culture-in-the-Danube-Region/), and thematically forms part of the OP JAK ‘The Land Gone Wild’ project (CZ.02.01.01/00/23_025/0008705).
