RESEARCH PROFILE
My research has focused on four areas. The first area is contemporary migration trends, the formation of new diasporas and changes in transnational communication. I have conducted ethnographic fieldwork on the Czech diaspora especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, and New Zealand, and Roma populations in Czechia, Slovakia and Canada.
The second area is migration to the Czech Republic and return migration of the Czech diaspora. I published monographs on migration from Ukraine and Kazakhstan with my colleagues and now we are studying Volhynian Czechs that after their resettlement to Czechia formed a specific interest group.
The third area is the research of urban culture and urban sociability. On public space in Prague, I published a text in Palgrave monograph a few years ago. I also teach Masterʼs course Urban Anthropology at Charles University.
The last area that my mentor at Central European University, Ernest Gellner, brought me to is the topic of nationalism. My recent publication on this topic is a study, From Interdependence to Disjunction: Gellner’s Theory and the Development of the Interrelationship Between the Concepts of Nation and Nationalism (2022). At Charles University, I teach a Masterʼs course on Nations and Nationalism.
