This paper considers the nature of funeral heritage, and sustainability challenges that arise as a consequence of the desire to protect that heritage as a set of practices, material objects and places that should be passed on to future generations. ‘Sustainability’ is now regarded as a core objective for heritage intervention although its meaning remains remarkably fluid. The lecture offers some reflections on tensions that arise as a consequence of attending to funeral heritage ‘sustainably’.
