RESEARCH PROFILE
My research has always focused on economic anthropology and anthropology of Romani groups. Specifically, I have studied Romani and Sinti activism as a civil rights movement in Albania and Italy.
In Albania, I conducted ethnographic research, living with Albanian Roma leaders, and I examined the system of structural indebtedness linked to European and international development aid processes for Romani organisations, which ends up placing communities – to varying degrees – in debt, despite the aim being to emancipate them. I am still working on this overlap between family ties and the economic and managerial ties within the organisations that characterise the Romani associational movement.
As a professional anthropologist, I have recently researched housing policies for Italian Sinti and reconstructed the history of the Italian Romani and Sinti civil rights movement through its responses to antigypsyism.
At present, as part of the RAW project, these themes will be developed and extended to Roma communities in Kosovo, with a focus on kinship as an economic resource.
