The war Russia waged on Ukraine has led to a massive migration of Russian citizens, mostly to post-Soviet cities such as the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. Due to Russia’s historical role as a colonising power and the fact that it continues to regard Georgia as its sphere of interest, the new guests are often met with mistrust. Treating Russians according to the code of hospitality is a way of reasserting sovereignty in a situation of subliminal hostility.
